The originality of the Storytelling Art, christened in 2003, is the following of a story from painting to painting. The movement started in 1989, a crucial year for Marc Ferrero who decided to leave Brussels, the speech bubbles, the panels and surroundings too limited, too demanding for the comic strip artist. In need of space, he left and sailed away, taking on board his characters and scenes; all together they took once more the course of their adventures but this time on a bigger scale. The Storytelling Art is the official appearance in painting, the beginnings of a new relation with narration, on the walls. Like in a movie, from one painting to another, Duke, Cello and Charly, in 2003 replaced by the sublime Lisa L’Aventura, develop the ordinary story of contemporary heroes; pursuits, betrayal, gambling and more. The English gentleman, the Italo-Argentinean master and the blond diva do their business, indifferent to the moods of an urban world saturated, noisy, restless, crowded with nameless people. In the midst of the "Comitive", a very exclusive private network held together by the close ties of friendship, they face the demons of their time. New York, Monaco, skyscrapers, asphalt, traffic jams, casinos, jazz clubs, opium dens; such are the backgrounds, the scenes, transcended by these protagonists of a novel, that in process of composition has taken the aspect of a road painting, instigator of the Storytelling Art. Indeed, in the course of the last ten years in pursuit of our three boundless heroes, the pictorial support has taken a new direction; it has become the medium of an epos that can be read painting (stereotype, focus) after painting. In a film-like way, in the acrylic versions, every storyboard makes up a scene that can be coordinated with another scene; in the oil versions the traditional "series" becomes on behalf of the script, a "sequence" cut out in as many paintings. Every painting is unique and for the collector all combinations are possible, without limits. It is about securing the pictorial continuity so that the thread of the story is recognizable. This specificity of the Storytelling Art has served as an anchor for its conceptual base. In order to assure the cohesion of the graphic novel, the artist has, beyond his style, developed a theme; the city, its icons, its consumer society… A cohesion of the palette between oils and acrylics, the happy colors, the lyrics, applied techniques and stencils allows the coordination between the paintings. In this logic of combination and artistic continuity, every collector possesses thus one or more parts of the story. It is in this way that he becomes a member of Comitive Connexion |
